'Thick and Thin' Abstract Art Exhibition Premieres in The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen

"In Diane Szczepaniak's paintings, color act as a conduit to manifest essentially metaphysical references of space and essence. Using thin and seemingly weightless veils of watercolor, she manipulates the translucency of the medium to produce both a richness of hue and the illusion of form that exists beyond the surface of her work." N. Elizabeth Schlatter, co-curator

March 20-May 14, 2005
Opening reception will be held on Sunday, March 20, from 2-4pm
Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm and Saturday-Sunday, 12-5pm.
Appointments for private viewings may also be arranged by calling 804-261-6200.
Visit www.artsglenallen for a current schedule.

This exhibition will illustrate a variety of approaches to abstract
painting, from sheer and luminous to dense and sculptural created by six
contemporary artists from Virginia, Washington D.C. and Maryland. The
artists include: Bernhard Hildebrandt, Joanne Kent, Sandi Ritchie Miller,
June Shadoan, Mary Shand and Diane Szczepaniak. Their paintings will
present to the observer a visually sensuous experience through these
explorations of texture, depth, form, gesture and color. Co-curated by N.
Elizabeth Schlatter, Assistant Director of the University of Richmond
Museums, and Gwen Van Ostern, independent curator, this selection of
paintings represents a multitude of associative meanings, the most salient
of which is the suggestion of landscape, both internal and external.
According to Schlatter, "We are pleased to present these artists' paintings
in the Richmond area because of their exceptional and individual techniques
employed for creating their compositions."

Among the artists, Joanne Kent is continuously exploring the use of paint
and its application. In her art, paint is used as a sculptural medium,
giving the works a charged physical presence that energizes the area they
encompass. For Diane Szczepaniak, her paintings are compositions where
form emerges from layers of color. Her subject matter therefore is form itself.
At times she applies the paint in thin washes of color and at other times
she puts on the paint straight from the tube, placing one color on top of
another.
Sandi Ritchie Miller applies enamel paint to Plexiglas to create
windows into infinite space. By painting multiple layers on this surface,
she builds depth, allowing the observer to transcend the confines of the
picture plane to what looks and feels like a portrayal of the cosmos.

"Through their individual works, the viewer can gain a greater appreciation
and understanding of the paint medium itself and the artists' use of the
medium," said Schlatter. "The exhibition title refers both to the paint
applications and to the enduring nature of abstract painting, through and
beyond the twentieth century."
